Ken Muscatel's U-14 prior to Atlas restorationin 2001. The boat was damaged when Ken barrel-rolled  the boat inSan Diego during a test run in 1998.
The U-14 rolled into the Hydroplane andRaceboat Museum November 2001 to begin its transition back to the 1982Atlas.
By the first of January 2002, the Atlaslooked like this with the Ron Jones sponsons, cockpit and spars removed.

The transom and parts of the rear bottomwere removed. Lot's of heat from torches loosened the old Hysol glue tofree up old aluminum parts.
Volunteer Jay Lehnert spent many longhours preparing the engine stringers for their new aluminum doublers.
When the small propane torches weren'tenough, Rich Matkin lit off the welding torch for big removal projects.Jeff Stubbers and Steve Peterson help with the removal of the old lifthooks.
The rear portion of the hull requirednew additions to the airtrap and new non-trip frames.
By the 1st of February the new cockpit, airtrap sides and spar were in place. This is a typical Saturday whichsaw as many as 10 volunteers join Jim Harvey and Ron Brown.
For the 1992 season, Jim Harvey upgradedthe Atlas hull by adding modern Ron Jones Sponsons. The old original sponsonswere cut off and thrown away. Thankfully, a hydro collector made off withthe old sponsons and kept them im his back yard. Here the left sponson, still with its red, white and silver T-Plus paint was dissected to usethe frames as templets.
